About the Author:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of EASY and BREAKABLE (Contours of the Heart series – NA), as well BETWEEN THE LINES, WHERE YOU ARE, GOOD FOR YOU and HERE WITHOUT YOU (Between the Lines series – YA/NA).
I’m a hopeful romantic who adores novels with happy endings, because there are enough sad endings in real life. Before writing full-time, I was an undergraduate academic advisor, economics tutor, planetarium office manager, radiology call center rep, and the palest person to ever work at a tanning salon. I married my high school sweetheart, and I’m Mom to three adult kids and four very immature cats.
16 year of Jules Maroni is a third generation circus performer, she is a high wire walker just like her fatherHer family is reduced to third rate circuses for reasons unknown to her. When they are given an invitation to join the prestigious Cirque American she is desperate for her family to accept and for them to be recognize for the talent they are. She wants to spread her wings and try more daring things like her heroine Bird Millman, but she feels that as long as they are stuck where they are she will never realize her dreams. What she doesn’t know is that there is a family secret, one that has kept them out of the limelight for a reason. As the family grudgingly accept the invitation things start to go Jules’s way but behind her quest for fame things start to go wrong and turns deadly.
This is a truly engrossing book! It wasn’t what I was expecting in a circus book but that’s what makes it different. The characters are lively and enthralling, the lifestyle is written wonderfully and the politics of a large circus surface as well. There is a whole lot of plot in this book, romance, old family rivalries, lots of drama and plot twists that you don’t see coming. Some of the high wire scenes with Jules makes your heart jump into your throat! It’ so well written that it actually feels real and believable. This book is a gem and one that needs to be read.

Lillian Linden’s mother in law, Margaret won a trip for two to Fiji. It’s a great opportunity for Lillian to get a break from her husband and children and to get closer to her mother in law. The first week of the trip goes better than she thought it would and was looking forward to the second week spent on a private island. Dave Hall is the company PR man, whose company sponsored the contest, accompanies the women on the second leg of the trip. Less than an hour to go on the flight the plane has an engine failure and crashes into the sea.
Lillian, Dave and Kent, the pilot, end up being marooned on a small island for almost two years. Things happened that Dave and Lillian can’t and won’t talk about when they are rescued. Secrets are kept and lies told to loved ones upon returning to their normal lives. As they return to civilization they find it hard to keep the truth of what happened buried and to keep how they feel hidden
This story is told in alternating chapters between Dave and Lillian. Some are in the past from what had happened on the island and some in the present during one last interview for the public for their stories to be told and for the lies and secrets to be kept once and for all.
The characters and story line are quite believable. It’s a survival story at it’s best. What would you do to survive, would you eventually try to make a life away from your loved ones not knowing if you would ever be rescued, would you do what you had to do even if it was difficult and painful? It was a gripping read and while there aren’t many twists in the story there are a few. I really enjoyed it but in saying this, the last 10% left me a bit miffed. I was really pleased with how it was going and how I thought the ending was going to be but the way the writer finished the story off was a bit over the top for me and spoiled it that tiny bit, not enough to make me dislike the story but it just put me off a bit. Because of that it went from a 5 star down to a 4. It’s still an amazing book, well written and captivating and worth reading.
The fourth and last book in Lauren Layne’s Sex, Love & Stiletto series The Trouble With Love is a second chance at love story. Emma Sinclair is the heartbreak expert at Stiletto magazine and writes a column, giving advice from her own experience at having her engagement abruptly ended at the altar. Her ex-fiancee, Alex Cassidy, works at a magazine connected to her own and is asked to be the editor-in-chief of Stiletto while the regular editor-in-chief is out. So of course, hijinx ensue.
I hadn’t read any of the other books in this series but after reading this one I liked it so much that I went back and read all of the others as well. I also haven’t read many second chance at love stories either but this may have sold me on that trope as well. The blurb made me want to read it right away because Emma was left standing at the altar and I had to know how someone could get past that for a second chance at love because that’s pretty freaking hard to get past. The first thing I loved about this book is the humor. There is a lot of camaraderie between the women of Stiletto, they know each other well and it seemed very real to see them laugh with each other. Then there are the couples and the jokes between them feel the same. I really enjoyed all of that and the best of it was the biting laughter between Alex and Emma which had history and lingering love to it.
The author did a great job at setting up the tension between Alex and Emma. But in the end the book was about more than just the tension between them, it was about discovering what actually happened between them all those years ago. As a reader I was anxious to know what had happened but both Alex and Emma needed to know happened on the others’ side as well. This book had depth to it but laughter too which is a great combination.
This book releases tomorrow.
