A Love to Last by Kelsey Browning

26878829Drifter Delaney Shields plans to breeze through Prophecy, Texas, before setting off on an around-the-world trip of a lifetime. She never expects to see sexy-as-sin Cal Maddox, the man she ran out on a decade ago. One look between them and their past attraction ignites, flaming hotter than ever. But acting on it would be disastrous because she’s not the sticking kind, and Cal has roots a mile deep.

Cal Maddox left the military only to find both the health of his dad and his hometown failing. When Delaney walks into his father’s custom boot shop, she spurs emotional memories and sexual fantasies Cal has no business indulging in. Especially once he realizes she’s the next Prophecy bootmaker, the only person who can design custom cowboy boots with the power to change a person’s destiny. But if fanning those old flames will keep her in Prophecy, he’s willing to take the heat, even if it means keeping secrets and risking his heart again.

Duty and desire throw Cal and Delaney together, but will their feelings be strong enough to forge a new bond or will they destroy their second chance at love?

I loved the premise of this book. The history of a family line of boot makers who also envision a child’s future in the design of a pair of handcrafted boots. I also love a book where old flames get back together. Laney and Cal’s path isn’t what you call smooth. Laney comes back to Prophecy after she receives a hand drawn picture from her old mentor and father figure that isn’t quite right. When she gets back home she realizes that he isn’t well and can’t carry on as Prophecy’s boot maker and has her lined up as the next one to carry on the business. She has other plans in mind and a history or running away. The more that Cal and his father convince her to stay the more she wants to run away.

I did get annoyed with Lacey, I really did. I understood why she was always on the run, trying to get away from the past of what her parents did to her and running from herself, did but she was just so flighty. She hemmed and hawed too much about wether she should stay or go. I sometimes wanted to sit her down and tie her to a chair to make her see sense. In saying that, she didn’t want the responsibility for being the one who sees the visions in the boots that so many have come to rely on and depend on for their future.

As much as she annoyed me, I love the way her character developed and grew. Each had thier share of history they had to overcome. The chemistry between her and Cal wasn’t flame hot all the time but a comfortable one with people who knew each other and could still be drawn together despite all the hurt in between but, was it enough to make her want to stay?

This is another great southern romance by Kelsey and a great start to a new series.

ARC received from author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
