Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova

imageNothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can’t trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland…

Alex comes from a long line of Brujas’ a family that is strong when it comes to magic. She discovers that of all her family she is the strongest and has qualities of all magical aspects. As Alex’s Deathday approaches she is so fearful of her magic she chooses to relinquish it, or at least she thinks she can. But what happens instead unleashes The Devourer, a force so dark and twisted it need magical energy to survive. She, along with Nova, another Bruja and her best friend Reshi, travel to the world of the dead to right the wrongs Alex has committed.

This is a wonderful magic filled adventure. The writer based a lot of the background of the Bruja and the ceremonies on the Day of the Dead and other similar Spanish rituals regarding honoring the dead and the Brujeria faith. Wonderful start to a new series.
